Crime has always been a major concern in America, and once cities started to develop, individuals found the need to ensure the peace as much as possible. These efforts have formulated the criminal justice system that we now know today and understanding deviance is a major element within the justice system. Deviant behavior is anything that is out of the norm for a particular culture.  In regards to the justice system, it is any behavior that is viewed as negative by the masses.

Criminal Justice is a program that utilizes various disciplines in order to prepare their students for the workforce; this course will allow students to dabble in studies such as psychology, sociology and much more. Students will gain an appreciation of how understanding deviance is important to every aspect of the criminal justice system and furthermore what this means for us as citizens of the United States; quite a tall order to fill during a students’ scholarship program.

Introduction to Criminal Justice seeks to demystify the nature of crime and how deviance plays a role in it. Several theories have been espoused to try and explain why crime exists in its various forms, and students will encounter terms such as labeling theory, conflict theory and radical theory. There are also positivist approaches that believe that the situation is not hopeless.  This, and several more theories and approaches exist, all of which will be discussed in Introduction to Criminal Justice.

Police officers, detectives and investigators are tasked with the responsibility of discovering and recognizing those engaged in or expressing deviant behaviors. According to the laws of the land, this branch of the criminal justice system is the first step in addressing crime. Introduction to Criminal Justice will give a basic outline of the roles performed by individuals in the law enforcement field and the process of learning these things might get students to join law enforcement after their student scholarship runs its course.

The courts will decide how to handle individuals who exhibit offensive behaviors. Our culture deems it necessary to punish those who go outside the acceptable bounds of law, for example, murder or rape. Lawyers, judges and juries are utilized in this country to decide whether an individual is guilty of a crime or not, whether they expressed deviant behaviors and what punishment they will receive. Corrections is the branch of the criminal justice system that seeks to reform those convicted of a crime and it comes in many forms. Probation, parole and correctional facilities are the forms which Americans are most familiar with. Understanding deviance can help those working in this field to better address how to handle individuals convicted of a crime; it prepares them for practically any eventuality.

Recognizing how deviance impacts each component of the criminal system will help you to decipher which path is best for you.
