The people of Maine like to think of themselves as forward-thinking. After all, to paraphrase their motto, as they go, so goes the U.S. One way the state does this is to not only provide its share of grants and tuition waivers for the institutions of higher learning inside its boundaries, but is also quite generous about its students pursuing advanced degrees elsewhere. Staying up to date with the latest facts about free college degree will be valuable and can uncover more options for assistance.

The first thing a local citizen should consider is the Maine State Grant Program (MSGP). It is a true need-based grant whose awards vary depending on the kind of institution you enroll in. It can go as high as $500 to $1,500 a year, depending on whether a student goes out-of-state, or in-state as well as a private or state school. There is a second program for those attending school part time or online, and is smaller.

Being a smaller member of the fifty states, Maine recognizes that all its institutions of higher learning don’t have all the possible degree programs a student might be interested in. As such, it has teamed up with the other states of New England to create a greater grant program to fit all students’ needs. What Maine and the five other states of New England did was set up a program called the Tuition Break. If a resident of Maine can’t find an academic program within the state’s borders, the Tuition Break will grant them as much as $7,000 a year to attend a school in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont as well as the state of Pennsylvania and Washington DC.

For those looking to pursue a career in construction, Maine administers the AGC of Maine grant. It is a need-based grant that requires applicants to attend a school within the state. Awards can range from $1,000 to $3,000 a year. Besides a FASFA, the applicant must do an essay, get letters of recommendation and be interviewed.

Another type of program the state administers is its share of tuition waiver. These are basically loans, but can be completely forgiven if certain post-graduate obligations are met. For example, Maine has the Dental Education Loan. The state will cover up to $20,000 a year for four years in return to setting up a dental practice in an under-served population. It is applicable to any school.

More generalized is the Maine Tuition Waiver Program. It is restricted to students who are child or spouse of a law enforcement official, emergency worker or fireman who was killed in the line of duty. It is also open to students who came up through Maine’s Foster Child system and attended a state high school. Thirty of these awards are handed each year, are restricted to state schools, and are fulfilled on a first come, first serve basis. If they qualify, their tuition is completely paid for.

Lastly, the state has another trade-oriented waiver program. Entitled Educators of Maine, it is open to any citizen who will pursue a degree in child care, secondary school education or speech pathology.
