What is translation? It is the process of replacing the meaning of an incomprehensible text with a rendition that the recipient of the message will most easily understand. Translation is employed in the sense of ascertaining the meaning of the language of a document, as well as its relation to facts. We also use it to convey the use of a particular word in reference to the notion it represents. Portuguese literature and culture were significantly influenced by the Arabs. Just like the Portuguese, the Arabs were also great conquerors which turned Arabic Translation into a significant communication means between colonies and oppressors. From the late 8th Century to the late 15th Century, the Moors, Arabs from northern Africa, occupied the area that is now Spain and Portugal. The Arabs, however, differed from other colonizers by encouraging multiculturalism. This period was marked by ethnic and religious flourishing among all groups on the Peninsula which led to the rapid development of translation. In fact, the occupation of the Moors during this long period of peace and prosperity shaped what is today the Portuguese language. Many modern Portuguese words are borrowed from the Arabic language.

French is another language that has not been able to avoid the Arabic influence. Due to the large number of conquered countries in Africa, the French language acquired a lot of the Arabic language vocabulary. These include – but are not limited to – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and others. Since being granted their independence from France, many of the inhabitants of these countries have immigrated to France, where they make up France’s largest ethnic minority. Significantly, Frances culture has been influenced by the Arab world. In short, French is one of the most widely used languages throughout the world – either as an official or a second language.
